Ideally situated in the heart of the Twin Cities—between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul, Minn.—Dominium’s Union Flats apartment community is a transit-oriented development, with close access to the Metro Green Line light rail and adjacent to many city roads, sidewalks, and trails. As a result, the developer added amenities geared toward cyclists, including an indoor bike café and a repair shop.

The designers chose to continue the community’s vibrant interior design style to the bike lounge with large colorful tire treads painted on the floors and walls in the bike storage area of the room. On the other half, large worktables with integrated stools provide space to work on bike parts, while also providing dual functionality as a maker’s space for residents with other hobbies.

Custom lighting installed in patterns provides additional interest to the ceilings, and focused task lighting is used over the worktables. Large TVs allow residents to watch their favorite shows or sporting events, while vending machines and a large sink round out the opportunities for flexibility in the space. Lockers line one of the walls so residents can store their tools and hobby equipment within the lounge without having to always carry them to and from their residential units.
