By Sept. 6, 72% of apartment households had made a full or partial rent payment for the month, according to the National Multifamily Housing Council’s Rent Payment Tracker, a survey of 11.7 million professionally managed apartment units from across the country.

This reading is 4.4 percentage points lower than the share of renters who made a payment by Sept. 6, 2020, and compares with the 81.2% share of renters who paid by the same date in 2019.

“The most recent NMHC Rent Payment Tracker data found 72% of apartment households made a full or partial rent payment by Sept. 6, marking a 4.4 percentage point decrease from the prior year. However, Labor Day weekend and natural disasters likely had an impact,” said Chris Bruen, NMHC director for research. “We believe we will have a better sense of payment figures by the end of the month. That being said, fundamentals for the industry remain strong as evidenced by strong demand and healthy rent growth.”
