Joining the annual Multifamily Executive Conference this year will be keynote presenter Vikram Mansharamani, an author, a lecturer at Harvard’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and a global equity investor.

Mansharamani will share insight with conference attendees on how to navigate uncertainty, which is a theme of his latest book, “Think for Yourself: Restoring Common Sense in an Age of Experts and Artificial Intelligence,”debuting on store shelves or your online bookseller on June 16. The book, which follows “Boombustology: Spotting Financial Bubbles Before They Burst,” explores strategies for people looking to restore self-reliant thinking in a data-driven and technology-dependent yet overwhelmingly uncertain world.
He shares that his new book has three primary takeaway messages. The first is that business leaders need “to keep experts on tap, not on top,” he says. “Experts are very useful. But your own needs may vary dramatically than what an expert or system brings to bear. You want to be in control.”
Second, expertise and technology by definition have silos, and that’s where the crumbs can fall through the cracks. “The connecting of dots between silos is more beneficial. Crossing silos needs to be your domain as a leader.”Third is regarding how business leaders can empower themselves. While it’s fine to have a depth and focus, be sure to supplement that with “a breadth of perspective.”

He also encourages multifamily industry leaders to triangulate multiple perspectives, especially in the current environment due to COVID-19. “If we think today about the uncertainty, we agree that the public health perspective is important, we agree the economic perspective is important, and we agree the government perspective is important,” he says. “But only looking through one lens would be incomplete. My point is there are multiple sides to every perspective. When we combine those, we might get a map of true uncertainty. It’s very important to zoom out to see the bigger picture.”
Mansharamani adds that the book features a wide variety of examples from all walks of life.
