The 2018 MFE Concept Community is a nine-month program designed to promote best practices in sustainable design and development. The project, a collaboration between MFE; architect Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM); and developer–operator AMLI Residential, will examine the steps necessary to help multifamily businesses create profitable, environmentally sound communities that foster resident health and wellness. Along the way, we’ll spotlight various products and design considerations that encourage net zero building performance, reduced costs, and improved ROI.

As president of AMLI Residential, Philip Tague oversees the company’s development and construction activities. Prior to joining AMLI in 1981, he worked for the Chicago law firm of Mayer Brown. Philip is a past president and/or chairman of the Atlanta Apartment Association, the Georgia Apartment Association, and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional. Philip received a B.S. from Northwestern and a J.D. from The Ohio State University.
Vice president for sustainability at AMLI Residential, Erin Hatcher has overseen, managed, or assisted in over 50 LEED projects varying in size from 9,000 square feet to more than 500,000 square feet, including high-rise, retail, health-care, educational, office, and campus developments. Prior to joining AMLI in 2012, Erin worked as a sustainability consultant in Chicago focusing on LEED for New Construction projects. She received her BFA in interior design from the Illinois Institute of Art, Chicago, and is a LEED Accredited Professional and a certified Construction Documents Technologist.
Brian Lee, FAIA, a design partner at SOM, practiced in the firm’s San Francisco office for 28 years before joining SOM’s Chicago office in 2007. His portfolio encompasses an array of award-winning projects on all scales, including the Chicago Public Library’s Chinatown Branch and the China World Trade Center in Beijing.
Brian’s work was exhibited in the 2004 Venice and Beijing Biennales, the 2008 World Architecture Festival in Barcelona, and the 2015 Chicago Biennial. He is a former board member of Habitat for Humanity San Francisco and Chinatown Community Development Corp. San Francisco and is director emeritus of On Lok Inc., a nationally recognized leader in community health care. Brian, a LEED accredited professional, received his B.A. in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, and his M.A. from Harvard University.
Luke Leung’s work includes Burj Khalifa, currently the world’s tallest man-made structure, as well as General Motors’ Global Headquarters, Roche Diagnostic in Indianapolis, the Embassy of Ottawa in China, the Rolex Tower in Dubai, and the Pertamina Tower, the tallest and largest net-zero building on Earth. He is a multiple winner of several awards from the National Institute of Building Sciences and ASHRAE, among other industry organizations. Additionally, Luke serves as chairman of the Building Pressure Committee of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings and of the Sustainable Committee with the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
Laura McComb, a LEED Accredited Professional specializing in homes, joined AMLI in 2016. Previously, she worked as the Community Conservation Corps and Transportation fellow at the Shi Center for Sustainability. She received her B.S. in sustainability science from Furman University.
Jennifer Wolf joined AMLI in 1990 and since then has held several positions involving financing, feasibility, and analysis. As senior vice president, development, she is responsible for the firm’s development activities in Chicago. Jennifer holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and is a LEED Accredited Professional.
