According to Michigan Live, the Ann Arbor City Council is looking at a rezoning request for four apartment buildings being proposed for the city's east side by Capital S Investment Co. A homeless camp used to occupy the wooded site where the developer is looking to add 160 units on a parcel that is currently zoned for 120. The plan includes a clubhouse, 252 parking spaces, and 40 affordable units that would be rent-restricted for 99 years.
The future of the Brightdawn Village apartment project in Ann Arbor could be in jeopardy if the developer and city planning staff can't agree on appropriate zoning. The city planning commission unanimously recommended against the rezoning earlier this year, saying it would be inconsistent with adjacent zoning, the surrounding land uses, and the city’s master plan for development.
About 20 neighboring households signed a petition opposing the rezoning. At a neighborhood meeting last year, residents expressed concerns with the height of the buildings, traffic through the neighborhood, and privacy for the residential homes, according to city documents.
Gil-Ad Schwartz and his brother Iddo Schwartz challenged the petition Monday in an emailed statement, claiming 17 out of 19 who signed don’t have legal ownership of adjacent land. The developers also say they have the support of the city traffic engineers and other city departments.
