Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has announced Mill Creek Residential as co-developer for the transformation of Westfield Garden State Plaza in Bergen County, New Jersey. The first phase, including 550 luxury apartments, is expected to break ground in 2024 and open in 2026. The mixed-use property’s residences will be integrated into the shopping center featuring a 1-acre town green for residents and visitors. The phase will also introduce a "main street" outdoor district with restaurants, services, and shops, and restoration of a section of Sprout Brook.
“Our bold vision for Westfield Garden State Plaza is about transforming the shopping center into a true town center where the local community can come together to live, shop, work, and play. Our partnership with Mill Creek Residential will help bring this vision to life; leveraging their incredible experience and best-in-class approach to create a landmark destination for the community,” says Geoff Mason, executive vice president, U.S. development, design and operating management at URW.
Completely re-imagined, Garden State Plaza’s surface parking areas to the west of the shopping center will converted into the apartment homes, plazas, health and wellness amenities, and commercial office space. The development will include community and sustainability features such as new parks and green spaces, green building construction, enhanced connectivity to public transportation, and electric vehicle charging stations.
“We’re extremely excited to be selected as a co-developer at Westfield Garden State Plaza, and we’re eager to get started on the development. We look forward to working with URW, the borough of Paramus, and Bergen County to help create a truly unique experience for residents and visitors alike,” says Russell Tepper, senior managing director of development for Mill Creek Residential. “This will be a truly collaborative process, and our team is enthusiastic to watch it progress.”
