Woodfield Development is bringing much-needed housing to the River Arts District in Asheville, North Carolina, an area devastated by Hurricane Helene last year. According to the developer, The Wyre stands out as a testament to the ongoing revitalization and the commitment to showcasing the community’s artistic legacy.
“This new apartment community is a vital addition to Asheville's housing landscape, providing much-needed high-quality housing and helping to alleviate the pressure on the city's limited rental market. It represents a significant step forward in addressing the region's growing demand for diverse and accessible housing options,” says Greg Bonifield, co-founder of Woodfield Development. “In the wake of last fall's devastating hurricane, the creation of this apartment community is even more crucial. It not only helps rebuild and revitalize the affected areas but also demonstrates a commitment to resilient and sustainable development, ensuring that Asheville is better equipped to support its residents with beautiful, high-quality living options with all the latest amenities.”
The Wyre comprises 237 apartments, with a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans between 635 and 1,376 square feet. The first move-ins are expected April 1 with full completion in June. Units feature shaker-style cabinets, tiled backsplashes, luxe plank flooring, modern black hardware, custom built-ins, walk-in closets, and balconies.
Residents have access to community-oriented amenities, such as an elevated saltwater pool; a fitness center with a yoga studio, a sauna, and wellness pods; a rooftop terrace with views of the French Broad River; a conference room with study pods; a pet run and washing station; and an art studio.

Woodfield Development and The Wyre are committed to Asheville’s rich artistic culture.
“The Wyre is not just about upscale living; it’s about celebrating and preserving the artistic heritage of this community,” says Woodfield Development partner Brian Schick. “The building will feature displays by local artists, large murals on its exterior, and custom lighting fixtures by local glass artists, all designed to ensure that the creative spirt of Asheville remains at the forefront as the district reimagines its future.”
The development includes dedicated spaces for art exhibitions and cultural events as well as 16,000 square feet of on-site retail with an emphasis on fostering an interconnected community where residents and local creatives can thrive.
In addition, it will feature several commissioned murals by local artists that capture the community’s spirit. Eight individual murals will be visable from Clingman Avenue, paying homage to the area’s storied musical history. An 11-foot reproduction of Judith Cheney’s “The French Broad River in Asheville, NC: Past, Present & Future” will be displayed in the leasing center.
“The Wyre is poised to serve as a cornerstone of this revitalization, symbolizing both a fresh start for the neighborhood and a commitment to retaining its vibrant creative legacy,” adds Schick.
Partners for The Wyre include Housing Studio as the architect of record, CF Evans as general contractor, and a collaborative effort by Shah Architecture and S. Wilkins Designs on interior design.
