Merit: Mixed-Income

Submitted by: San Antonio Housing Authority The San Juan Homes revitalization certainly has a lot riding on its success. The San Antonio Housing Authority thinks the revitalization of the project is the catalyst to creating Class A affordable housing near the West side of San Antonio. By the looks of things, San Juan Homes, which was originally constructed in 1951, is passing the test.

The housing authority's ambitious redevelopment of the San Juan Homes project demolished 242 public housing units and brought 425 new mixed-income units online. To put the project together, the housing authority received tax credits and HOPE VI grants.

The housing authority also demolished a community center and replaced it with a new administrative center, two community centers, and a childcare center. The project also contains several live/work units. On the exterior, the housing authority sought inclusion with low fences, an attractive color combination, and distinct roof lines. On the interiors, the one-, two-, and three-bedroom units have fully equipped kitchens and 9-foot ceilings.
