Merit: Military

By Jennifer Popovec With the breathtakingly beautiful environment of Hawaii as its backdrop, the 1,325-acre Ohana Military Housing complex offers more than 5,600 homes to Navy and Marine Corps. personnel and their families.

Developed by Forest City Residential Group, the housing project incorporated suggestions obtained from various focus groups with military spouses, active-duty members, and their Commands. The overwhelming request was for increased living areas and improved resident services that encourage a true sense of community.

Designed by Woodley Architects of Highlands Ranch, Colo., the homes have a timeless architecture combined with updated floor plans and amenities that cater to the way people live today. The homes were inspired by pre-World War II towns and neighborhoods and mix architectural styles to create a sense of community. Expanded and enhanced green spaces throughout the complex include playgrounds, parks, picnic pavilions, pet runs, and several multi-functional community centers.

All homes are either single-family or duplex-style and offer more than 2,150 square feet of living space. They feature central air conditioning, two-car garages, large fenced yards, expanded square footage, and eat-in-kitchens. Larger bedrooms have private suites with his and her closets, a far cry from typical military housing. Units lease for an average of $2,216 per month.
