Mark Alfieri, COO of the multifamily platform at Dallas-based Behringer Harvard, was named the 2011 Executive of the Year by Multifamily Executive magazine at the MFE Awards luncheon in Las Vegas on Oct. 4, 2011. Alfieri was one of two individual honors and more than 40 awards presented at the event, which recognizes exceptional people, projects, and programs across 18 categories. Alfieri was honored for the rapid growth he oversaw at Behringer Harvard, taking the company from a relative unknown in the apartment space to a well-regarded owner and manager of 13,000 units across 47 Class A properties nationwide. Alfieri also successfully negotiated two rounds of funding from foreign investors and other capital partners. But more than anything, Alfieri is the consummate dealmaker—in fact, one colleague says Alfieri just “grinds out deals.”
“Mark represents all that we have come to expect from the winners of the MFE Executive of the Year award. First and foremost, he is an incredible leader. What’s more, Mark is incredibly well-respected by his peers, and shows a tenacity and determination that permeates every aspect of his work,” said Shabnam Mogharabi, editor-in-chief of Multifamily Executive. “His track record speaks for itself—the growth and evolution of Behringer Harvard in the past three years is unequaled.”
Additionally, Carlisle Development Group’s COO Kenneth Naylor was named MFE’s second Rising Star of the Year. The award, given to an industry up-and-comer under 40 years of age, recognized Naylor’s impressive work in tax-credit development in Florida.
The editors of MULTIFAMILY EXECUTIVE magazine also unveiled the fifth annual Editors’ Choice Award, which recognizes a project that is “best in show.” That honor went to The Fitzgerald, an impressive mid-rise apartment community in Baltimore developed by The Bozzuto Group. The innovative project also received the Grand Award for Project of the Year: Mid-Rise, as well as the Grand Award for Marketing & Advertising.
This year’s winners were chosen by a group comprised of the magazine’s editors and five industry judges: Rohit Anand, principal and head of East Coast operations for Irvine, Calif.-based KTGY; Greg Bonifield, partner of Woodfield Investments in Ashburn, Va.; Eileen Lee, vice president of environment at the National Multi Housing Council in Washington, D.C.; Christina Steeg, senior vice president of marketing and training at Simpson Housing in Denver; and Julie Smith, president of Bozzuto Management Co. in Greenbelt, Md.
