Dutch architecture firm MVDRV has created a dramatic new mixed-use community concept with a shape that defies definition.

The 560,000-square-foot Silhouette, to be built on a corner parcel in the city center of Moscow, Russia, will tower above its surroundings at 256 feet at its highest point. A modular construction process will allow the builders to create the structure’s undulating-squares design while accommodating the resulting interior layout.

The complex’s exterior will feature spaces for distinctive entranceways and a roofscape configuration specifically shaped to provide enhanced views of the city skyline. Silhouette’s red ceramic façade references the constructivist architecture of the surrounding area and will serve as a warm welcome for residents and visitors.

Silhouette will contain approximately 305,000 square feet of luxury apartment space, 88,500 square feet of commercial space, 14,800 square feet of shared spaces, and 143,000 square feet of underground parking. Commercial and shared uses will include a sports center, an event space, a sky deck, and flexible work space.

The apartments will be located on the top floors and will vary in shape, size, and configuration. The largest will be located on the building’s corners and provide panoramic city views in every direction.

The concept was chosen from among multiple proposals for the space in a closed competition by client GK Osnova. MVDRV and GK Osnova are preparing to present the project to the Moscow State Architectural Committee for approval.
