Architizer, the professional and social networking site devoted to design practitioners, has launched its first design competition and is calling for entries. The entry period closes at 11:59 p.m. EST Nov. 28, but entering isn't difficult.
The Total Housing: Apartments competition is the first in a series of contests that seeks to create "a definitive source for residential design that goes beyond standardized and canonical models of inhabitation." Co-sponsored by Actar publishers and Storefront for Arts and Architecture, Total Housing: Apartments was developed to address the disconnect that exists between old concepts of domestic space and the requirements of contemporary urban life.
Architizer is looking for apartment projects—built or proposed, conceived or completed in the past three years—that demonstrate innovation through materials usage, program, technology, or progressive concepts.
The project's author or authors must submit the entry, and information must include the lead design firm or project leader and credit all team members (a key component of Architizer's founding mission). Entrants may submit multiple projects.
Five winners will be announced on Dec. 6 and will be featured on Architizer, as well as part of a performance-exhibition at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York. Winners also will be asked to contribute to Actar's upcoming publication, Total Housing.
Winners will be selected by a jury, which will include: Joel Sanders, founder and principal, Joel Sanders Architect; Calvin Tsao, principal, Tsao & McKown Architects; Eva Franch, director, Storefront for Art and Architecture; Elisa Ours, vice president of planning and design, Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group; Marc Kushner, AIA, co-founder of Architizer; Wayne Congar, editor, Actar NY; and Albert Ferre, managing editor, Actar.
