The two high- and mid-rise towers in Studio Gang’s Amsterdam Tower concept are designed to reflect their upcoming placement in Amsterdam, Netherlands, at a key city intersection between a park and the edge of the Buitenveldert neighborhood, one of many mid-century planned communities built in response to a city housing crisis.
Buitenveldert is defined by its open green spaces, mid- and low-rise housing structures, concrete exteriors, and rational façade grids. The Amsterdam Tower structures present themselves as "warped" renditions of the surrounding geometry, creating a modern façade and providing wider views and visual connections between the buildings.
The towers will frame a central public plaza designed by Piet Oudolf with Deltavormgroep, with retail, dining, and public uses on the towers’ lower levels. These spaces are designed to foster social connectivity at the pedestrian level, carrying new urban activity into an older section of the community.
The upper floors will contain 250 new residences—sorely needed housing as Amsterdam continues to grow. A planted roof, photovoltaic panels, thermal storage, and energy-efficient envelopes are intended to mitigate the buildings’ environmental impact.
The project is currently in the design process and is set to open in 2020.
