Q: How can developers make apartments and condos kid-friendly?

A: Families are always part of our consideration in building apartments. We include ‘‘ amenities such as playgrounds, kids' activity rooms and planned activities that would appeal to all of our clientele. Careful thought is placed on the details: What age group would playground equipment best suit? Can the kids walk to school? Is there quality daycare in the area?

From a site planning perspective, we try to make our properties more kid-friendly by placing our largest two-bedroom units and three-bedroom units only on the first and second floor instead of the third floor. We also try to put the majority of our larger units in locations on the property that have less vehicular traffic such as on cul-de-sacs instead of thru streets or away from major thoroughfares. Tot lots, playgrounds, and open space are also planned near our larger units with families in mind.

We've also built our children's game room with glass partitions adjacent to fitness centers, with the thought that the parents can work out and still keep an eye on their children who are playing in the game room.”
