Jystrup Savvaerket • Location: Jystrup, Denmark • Architect: Studio Vandkunsten • Built: 1983 • Units: 21 • Notable: The development includes four supplemental rooms with full baths that can be rented out or used for visiting guests, home offices, or families who need more space.
A beautiful example of co-housing, Jystrup Savvaerket merges the independence of private living units with the advantages of community living. The innovative glass-covered ‘streets’ connect the residences to the common house, conveniently located at the center of the L-shaped development. The common house becomes the epicenter for community life, as it’s the location for cooperative dinners six nights a week. Each unit has access to private outdoor space and because of the south-facing orientation and the intelligent saw-tooth design, the streets are naturally heated in the winter.
