BUILDER's Leah Demirjian shares plans for a new complex planned for downtown Los Angeles. Developed by SunCal and designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, the $2 billion mixed-use development is slated for the heart of Los Angeles’s Arts District, which is located at the southern edge of the city’s Downtown neighborhood.
Dubbed 6AM for its location on 6th street, the project—which includes two 58-story towers—will be the tallest structures in the District, and will feature live/work residences and creative offices as well as two hotels, retail, and public gathering spaces.
The firm has conceptualized a contemporary design that aims to complement the creative, industrial neighborhood. Articulated as a grouping of parallel bars, the development’s 1,736 residences, offices, and hotels will be raised approximately forty feet above street level on a platform. The areas beneath and between those spaces will contain the development’s commercial units, walking paths, and social areas.
