Habitat 67 • Location: Montreal • Architect: Moshe Safdie • Built: 1967 • Units: 158 • Notable: Located on the Marc-Drouin Quay on the St. Lawrence River, Habitat 67 was built as part of Expo 67, one of the world’s largest universal expositions. Titled “Man and His World,” the exhibition featured housing as one of its main themes. Moshe Safdie designed the project based on his master’s thesis at McGill University.
Architect Moshe Safdie created a design that was unlike anything else for apartments—a high-density arrangement of homes with gardens, with modular interlocking building forms. Once combined, it became a piece of art unto itself. When I first saw Habitat 67, it struck me to see the effect an architect could have on the built environment utilizing new technologies. It was very inspiring for a child to see during the ’67 world expo. Although it never caught on, it is innovative even today.
